The 2024 CHOICE course How to Use VStar still has some seats left. It runs May 27 - June 21 and is being taught by Aritra Das. This is the only time the course will be taught in 2024.

This is a really valuable course, whether you are new to VStar or want to improve your skills with it:

- use VStar to look at light curves in a variety of ways

- use VStar to do data analysis of variable stars

- use VStar in your data mining

  • Are you trying to determine what type of variable star you are looking at?
  • Interested in data mining but don't know the basics about variables?
  • New to variable stars and want to learn about the types AAVSOers observe?

There are spaces available in the excellent AAVSO CHOICE course "Variable Star Classification and Light Curves". This course, taught by Blake Crosby,
begins Monday, June 5, and runs through July 2. Register before June 4.

Hello everyone, I'm an inspired student to specialize in data mining, looking for some tips and advices how to start my journey to become expert in this field. I'm aiming to a lot of practical work, need a career path/ recommendations on what to start with, python? excel? I'm studying quantitative methods in economics and information systems so business-side isn't the big deal for me, just need the technical skills and don't know where to start.

Thanks in advance ;)

ZTF, GAIA and TESS data mining questions

Within the framework of the Vend-RNe programme I want to check the latest brightness of several recurrent novae or RNe candidates in ZTF, TESS, GAIA and TESS databases. I have several questions.

1) Please could anyone help me how to find the LASAIR objectIDs in order to get recent ZTF observations? (Via VSX I can see only 3-4 month old ZTF observations.

2) Is there any way to get recent observations (from the recent 24 hours) GAIA and TESS missions?

Thanx in advance for the help!

Robert

The NSVS data base has been "unavailable" for over a month at https://www.lanl.gov/errors/system-notification.php.   Does anyone know of an alternate website for the Northern Sky Variability Survey?

Many thanks,

Kevin

Updates to LcTools for Data Mining TESS Light Curves

Hello Everyone,

Over the past year, I have greatly expanded the capabilities of LcTools (see forum topic "LcTools for Analyzing TESS, K2, and Kepler Light Curves" for original background information). The system now supports a new signal detection method called QuickFind which enables you to process light curves extremely fast. This is ideal for data mining TESS light curves where rapid signal processing is important due to the sheer volume of data.
