New Supernova SN 2023rve

Greetings,

I’d like to bring your attention to a new relatively bright supernova that we discovered two nights ago (08 September 2023). Its magnitude on the night of discovery was 14.0 (Ic), I observed it again on the last two nights and it was at the same brightness as well, with a minor increase.

Spectroscopic observation was done for the supernova by Claudio Balcon (Belluno A.O. ISSP) in Italy, and it was found to be (SN II). You might be interested in observing it and reporting your results to AAVSO database once the star is added. I submitted a request two days ago.

UBVRI sequence for SN 2023rve in NGC 1097

     This is a nice find.  Not mentioned is that the host is the bright southern galaxy NGC 1097.  There is a high-quality UBVRI sequence adjacent to the galaxy measured by Mario Hamuy & Jose Maza:

...that should be suitable for following the supernova and placing data on a standard scale.

The SN has been added to VSX database, and now you can post your photometry observations using the name (SN 2023rve).

Yes indeed, more observations of this supernova are highly needed especially from the southern hemisphere, as it does not get high in the sky in the northern hemisphere. Appreciate your interest.
