Where to start in AAVSO variable stars research?

Wed, 11/03/2021 - 22:26

Hey everyone, i'm starting this thread on behalf of my team at the
Osservatorio Astronomico "Emiliano Nardone", Casalattico.

After years of preparations and some minor projects, we are finally ready to get involved in more serious Variable Stars research activities!

I would like to know exactly what we should start with and what steps we need to take, right from the very basics... we would greatly appreciate directives such as which documents to read, which research to pick etc...

We are looking forward to becoming active members of the Association!

Where to start?

Giampiero:

The scope of your questions about variable star research is so broad that it would take a few hours to provide a comprehensive response.   It would be very helpful if you tell us about the equipment that you are planning to use, the team's specific interests and ultimate goals.

You say where to start, basically ...

For a few years now, I have been giving the AAVSO course "Classification of variable stars and light curves" in French and Blake Crosby gives it every spring in English.

If you start and depending on the degree of your knowledge, this course could be the beginning of a solid foundation then in 4 weeks, we explore the types of variable stars with their particularities. This can then offer a good basis on what interests you while having a general knowledge of the stars because, as we all know, all stars vary, it only depends on the magnitudes studied.
