uploading data from 2 observers

Dear all,

We are  building a group of observers/processers.

We did a run with a friend : he did images with his telescope and I did the reduction process with Vphot.

So how can we do to upload data of the report and tells Vphot that there are 2 observers ?

We want that the report be credited for 2 not one observer

Thanks

Extended Format Report

Jean:

I don't think more than one observer id is permitted in the Obscode field of the AAVSO Extended Format Report?

You could add another with a comment in the Notes field.

Thanks Ken,

Well, in…

Thanks Ken,

Well, in case of the observer in comments (notes field), could this observer see his observation with his code in LCG ?

Try It!

Jean:

No. Only the one in the obscode field would show up in the LCG. You could compromise with your friend and share the credit in 50% of the reports.

Just to make sure, why not simply try to enter two obscodes into a Report with a text editor and see if you can submit it? Separate them by a comma.

Well I tried it and it doesn…

Well I tried it and it doesn't work...

Ken, it is a very serious question in fact : we are building a big project of observers linked to a group of processers to share the work of eclipsing binaries in France.

But we are blocked by this problem : the impossibility to upload report files to aavso with 2 observers code to give credit to the observer and the processer.

We noticed that many amateurs do not have the equipement to do images but are very motivated for process the images

The processers would process the images and the observers would take the images with their scopes.

The amateurs do not have all the time they would like because

- of personnal constraints (family, job...)

- it allows the processers to participate without having some telescope or camera

It is a mean to make coming new beginners... it is a very important step that aavso could do by allowing double observer code in reports.

You see, I have on my hard disk around 10 time series EB waiting because I do not have enough time free to prooess them

but I have collegues that woud like to process my files and if we could upload files with 2 obs code, I could share my images with other amateurs

Sure it is not difficult to modify the algorithm of webobs and would be very good benefit for aavso and number of uploaded observations...

Ken, could you send a word to aavso members that work on the webobs algorithm for this idea ?

Uploading data from two observers

Dear Jean,

Thank you for your post. First of all, I would like to say that your idea of connecting observers with processors is an excellent project for all the reasons you mentioned. The AAVSOnet is meant to fill a similar need - helping people who either don't have the equipment or suitable location to make their own images, but are interested in processing and submitting data.

Regarding your suggestion that we allow multiple observers to appear in the observer code field for these observations submitted to the AAVSO International Database (AID), WebObs does not allow this because our policy is that the person who processed and submitted the data should have their observer initials attached to the observations. We recommend that the observer code of the person (or robotic telescope system) who made the images, if they are not the same person, be included in the "Notes" field of the observations. One reason to do it this way is that if there is a problem with the observations, the processor is the person who should be contacted and asked about them.

With many thanks and very best regards,
Sara

Dear Sara and Ken

I thank…

Dear Sara and Ken

I thank you for your answer.

However I think that the project will be difficult to raise if there is only one observer code linked to the observation.

The project is based upon motivation to have more and more members interested in uploading data to webobs.

The reason in a sentence ... " the credit makes the motivation "...

An observers does observation and uploads data in webobs because credit is given to his observations.

Without officiel credit on the aavso web site in LCG; few observers would be interested.

The information of one observer code in comments is not the same as a validation in  webobs.

Well I will speak with the "double star commission" of my society to see how we could do

Best regards

Jean
