If you are interested in giving an in-person or remote oral presentation please follow the instructions below for submitting an abstract (Please note: submitting an abstract does not guarantee you a slot)
Before submitting an abstract, please note: If your abstract for an oral presentation or Poster is accepted: You must register for the Annual Meeting before Sept. 20th to complete your acceptance and be put on the Annual Meeting Agenda.
Your presentation must be focused on one of the following topics:
- Variable star research
- History
- Astronomy education
- Diversity in astronomy
You have the Following Presentation options:

- Oral Presentation - In Person or Online
In your abstract, be sure to include all items described on this checklist or your abstract will be returned to you. For abstract examples, please go to here.
Submission Instructions:
Email your abstract as a Word document with a file name and email subject line of “[Your last name]_Abstract23” to:
Joyce Guzik at joy@lanl.gov and cc Elizabeth Waagen at eowaagen@aavso.org by September 3, 2023, 11:59 p.m. ET. (We highly suggest submitting it early: if revision is requested by the reviewing committee, you may submit a revision, which still must be received by the Sept. 3rd. deadline). Deadline extended to September 11, 2023.
In the body of the email please include what type of presentation you are requesting and whether you will be attending in person or online.
You will be informed of whether or not your abstract was accepted by September 18, 2023.

Conference Proceedings
Authors of abstracts accepted for oral and posters presentations will have the option of preparing full proceedings papers for inclusion in a special "Conference Proceedings" volume. Proceedings papers should be submitted to Joyce Guzik (joy@lanl.gov) by December 8,2023.
Conference proceedings will not be formally refereed, but will be curated and edited by guest editor Joyce Guzik and AAVSO staff. In general, these papers should be similar to manuscripts for submission to the JAAVSO. In short, they should be similar to manuscripts for submission to the JAAVSO (instructions for JAAVSO authors are here). In short, they should be similar to JAAVSO manuscripts in organization, with sections roughly as follows:
* Introduction giving motivation for the work and background
* Methods, whether observational or theoretical
* Results
* Discussion/conclusions
* Acknowledgments
* References in the same format as in JAAVSO: mentioned in the text as (author(s) date) and
listed alphabetically at the end
Figures and other graphics are encouraged, but should not be much more extensive than will be included in the presentation. Conference proceedings should not include extensive data tables. Those should be saved for subsequent publication in an archival journal such as the JAAVSO. Ordinarily, there will be no length limitation, although our staff will request that verbose writing be condensed.
