HI Cliff,
A smaller apeture telescope 4-6" is good for Solar Observing. You need a Solar Filter on the front of the telescope, to only allow .001% of the sunlight to come through. There is mylar or Solar Screen that can be used for your filter. Full apeture, or a sub-apeture mask for a larger telescope .

For my solar set…
Hi Cliff,
For my solar set up I use a home built 10 cm F/10 Newtonian, an eyepiece that provides a magnification of 62X, and most important a Thousand Oaks full aperture filter.
Take care.

Thanks for the feedback. The optics are 400 mm FL, 71 mm D = 2.8". So perhaps on the small size. I was wondering if you can judge the resolution shown in the image? Is that enough resolution for accurate counting?
Am I correctly reading the manual - for long term comparisons the sensor needs to be my eye? Capturing an image such as this with an electronic sensor and then analyzing it is not acceptable?
thanks
CLiff
There are folks more knowledgeable than me so I hope they correct any incorrect statements I may make.
First, I think the size of your scope is fine. The original scope used to track sunspots had a diameter of 80 mm.
Second, you are correct all sunspot count should be done visually
I hope this helps.

Steve
