Dear Photometrists,
I wanted to call your attention to two popular AAVSO CHOICE courses that might be of interest to you:
- DSLR Photometry - September 3 - 28
- Photometry Using VPhot - September 3 - October 5 (for AAVSO members only)
If you are new to DSLR Photometry or just want to perfect your results, I definitely recommend that you take the DSLR Photometry course. The instructor is Mark Blackford who is also the author of the excellent AAVSO DSLR Observing Manual so taking this course will give you a good opportunity to get clarification on any aspects of this observing technique that troubles you.
For those of you who wish to take advantage of the excellent online photometric data analysis tool VPhot, now is your chance to learn how to use it and all its features fully. The advantage VPhot has over other photometry software is that it is customized for AAVSO use. In particular, it automatically loads all of the comparison star magnitudes and you can output your report in AAVSO format. Since the use of VPhot is a benefit of AAVSO membership, this course is limited to members.
As with all CHOICE courses, you will participate through a special forum on which material will be posted and discussion will be led by an experienced instructor. Since there are no "live" presentations, it does not matter where you live of how you choose to fit this into your busy schedule.
To sign up, click the appropriate link below:
- I am an AAVSO member (cost of each course $35)
- I am not an AAVSO member (cost of each course $60)

Do you have the schedule for the next available course?
Hi Timothy,
The course listing for the year can be seen by clicking the "CHOICE Courses" link that you can find just under the AAVSO banner on most pages of our website. Then you should click either "Member Registration" or "Non-member registration" depending on your membership status. This will take you to the course listing page. Those courses having a PayPal button next to them are available (the others have either started already or are over). If you click the name of the course itself, you will be able to read the course description.
As you can see, there are just two more courses available to sign up for between now and the end of the year:
Exoplanet Observing -- October 1-27
Analyzing Data with VStar -- October 1-26
(Both are excellent courses, I might add)
A similar schedule will be posted for 2019 toward the end of the year.
I hope that helps,
Sara
