2015 Oct. 11.4129 UT, 11.8 mag (CCD, unfiltered)

USNO-B1.0 0658-0470476 (17 34 47.346 -24 09 01.77)
R1= 18.88 , R2= 18.55, I= 16.44 mag

Hi all,

In Simbad there is a cataloged IR/2MASS source,  IRAS 17317-2407 with the (2000.0) coords listed as

17:34:48.27  -24:09:02.6.  Same object or close companion ?

Nova or red variable?

Hi Steve,

That very red star (J-K= 2.28) is only 7" from the reported position and different reports give positions with errors larger than those 7" so maybe the variable is that red star.
Only new observations with better resolution will give us the answer. I will add it to VSX with the CBAT position and no cross-ID and will revise it when we know its ID for certain.

An AAVSO Alert Notice will be posted October 14 on Nova Oph 2015 No. 2 = TCP J17344775-2409042.

Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 17 34 47.75  Dec -24 09 04.2

It is in VSX and a sequence is available for it, so please observe this nova and report your observations to the AAVSO International Database. If you report them before 14:00 UT (noon EDT) I should be able to include them in the Alert Notice!

New sequence

Hi Jim - my mistake, thought it was the brighter of the two stars (which happens to be around 11.8), just a scale issue with the chart at 1-deg field where the label sits exactly between the two stars.

Line option in vsp

Rob, You can choose the option in VSP to put a line pointing from the label to the star, an issue which I had fought long and hard to have added, to avoid such confusion :) Thoug,h it would be even better if it was the default, rather than just an option, to avoid this issue even coming up...
