The AAVSO Newsletter, published January 2, April 1, July 1, and October 1, includes a column called "Talking about the AAVSO". Here we list talks/presentations AAVSO members/observers have given or will be giving on variable stars, the AAVSO, the sun, and astronomy in general.
The October issue will go to press in about 10 days. Please send in your items to me (eowaagen@aavso.org) before September 26 (sooner is better).
For each item, please include: date of event, location (place, city, state, country), name of audience, title of presentation, about how many people attended, and any comments you have on how it was received, if anything especially interesting came about as a result, etc. Here's a sample of a talk already given:
August 3, 2016, presentation on "Variable Stars, the AAVSO, and You", monthly meeting of the Workers Astronomy Club, Mytown, MA, about 60 people attended, well received. Nearly everyone who attended has become a variable star observer!
And a sample for a future event:
December 9, 2016, 7:30 p.m., general public talk on "Changing Stars and Why They Are Cool", Mytown Public Library, 123 Main Street, Mytown, MA.
I know there are many of you doing public outreach and educating - please share your work with us! Your having given a presentation may encourage someone else to present! Let us help spread the word about your upcoming event!
Many thanks, and good speaking and presenting,
Elizabeth Waagen, AAVSO HQ
Hi Everyone,
Here's a last-minute reminder to send me <eowaagen@aavso.org> info on talks/presentation you have given or will be giving on the AAVSO, variable stars, and astronomy. I need the info by noon tomorrow (Sep 27) to include in the October 2016 AAVSO Newsletter.
Many thanks, and good observing,
Elizabeth
Hi Everyone,
We are gathering material for the January 2017 AAVSO Newsletter. If you gave (or will be giving) a presentation about the AAVSO, observing, variable stars, the Sun, or general astronomy and haven't already sent details to me, PLEASE send them to me by 2017 JANUARY 3 so I may include them in the "Talking about the AAVSO" column of the AAVSO Newsletter. I need the date, title of your presentation, who you were (or will be) speaking to, location, and if it was (or will be) part of a larger event (such as a conference or convention). If anything special or unusual happened in connection with it, it would be great to include that as well. Many thanks!
Happy holidays, and Good observing!
Elizabeth Waagen, AAVSO HQ
I strongly encourage, cajole, beg people to heed Elizabeth's call and send her info on any public outreach or professional talks you give that are AAVSO/variables/sun related.
Elizabeth - here are two items for your next edition (from the AAS meeting in Grapevine, TX)

This poster summarized the work by two of my students using VSX and VStar.

This poster compared advice on observing variable stars between 100 years ago and today.
Thanks so much for the presentation information, Kris! They will make great additions to the Talking about the AAVSO column in the April AAVSO Newsletter.
best wishes,
Elizabeth
