March 14, 2011

Discovered by: Lou Cox, Jack Newton, and Tim Puckett, Ellijay, GA, in the course of the Puckett Observatory Supernova Search

Discovery Date: March 10.214 UT

Discovery Magnitude: unfiltered CCD magnitude 14.5 (limiting magnitude 19.0) taken with a 0.40-m reflector at Portal, AZ

Position: R.A. = 09:28:57.56  Decl. = -14:48:20.6 (equinox 2000.0)
SN 2011at is 20.4" east and 6.3" north of the center of PGC 26905 = MCG -02-24-27.

Spectra:  Spectra obtained March 11.81 UT with the Swift satellite (+UVOT) by F. Bufano, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), Osservatorio Astronomico di Catania; S. Benetti, INAF, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova; and A. Pastorello, Queen's University, Belfast, et al.; and March 12 UT with the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.5-m telescope (+FAST) by M. Calkins (reported by G. H. Marion, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), on behalf of the CfA Supernova Group), show SN 2011at to be a type-Ia supernova a few days before/around maximum.

Charts: Finder charts for SN 2011at (AUID 000-BJZ-619) may be plotted by entering the name or the coordinates above into VSP:  http://www.aavso.org/vsp

Reporting Observations: Please report all observations to the AAVSO as SN 2011at.

Notes:
a. Initially announced in CBET 2676 (Daniel W. E. Green, ed.).

b.  According to Green, the object was designated PSN J09285756-1448206 when posted on the Central Bureau's Transient Objects Confirmation Page (TOCP) webpage, and was designated SN 2011at based on spectroscopic reports.

c. Nothing was visible down to magnitude 19.1 at this position on images taken by Puckett on Feb. 13.

d. Bufano et al. report a multi-wavelength follow-up campaign of observing 2011at, using numerous ground-based facilities, is in progress.
