AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 270 (January 28, 2000)

2036+65 SUPERNOVA 2000E IN NGC 6951 IN CEPHEUS

We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU
Circular 7351
) that G. Valentini, E. Di Carlo, D. Guidubaldi, and E. Brocato,
Teramo Observatory, Italy, and A. Di Paola, F. D'Alessio, R. Speziali, G.
Li Causi, and F. Pedichini, Rome Observatory, discovered a supernova in NGC
6951 on CCD images taken on January 26.73 UT with the Teramo 0.72-m TNT
telescope.  Photometry taken on Jan. 26.73 UT yielded a preliminary magnitude
of V = 14.30.  Nothing was visible at the location of the supernova on CCD
frames taken on 1999 Dec. 18.78 UT.  Also, nothing was detected in
near-infrared (J, H) images from the 1.1-m AZT-24 telescope at Campo Imperatore
taken 2000 Jan 6.74 UT, nor does anything appear at the location on the
Digital Sky Survey.

The position of Supernova 2000E, located 6.3" west and 26.7" south of the
center of NGC 6951, is given as:

     R.A. = 20h 37m 13.8s     Decl. = +66 degrees 05' 50.2"    (epoch 2000)

The supernova is also located 28" west and 24" south of SN 1999el (cf. IAU
Circular 7288
).

Spectroscopy obtained by M. Turatto, G. Galletta, and E. Cappellaro, Padova,
Italy, on Jan. 27.83 UT using the 1.8-m telescope at Cima Ekar (+Afosc)
indicates that SN 2000E is a Type-Ia supernova a few days before maximum.

Accompanying is an AAVSO "e" scale preliminary chart prepared by C. Scovil
showing the location of the supernova.  Please use this chart to observe
2036+65 SN 2000E, and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters,
indicating which comparison stars you used.

Congratulations to G. Valentini, E. Di Carlo, D. Guidubaldi, E. Brocato, A.
Di Paola, F. D'Alessio, R. Speziali, G. Li Causi, and F. Pedichini, on their
discovery!
