A Happy New Year to all followers of the High Energy Network Obs Section!
I hope that 2024 will see some exciting new HE astrohysics events that we can follow up together
- The LIGO Gravitational Wave detectors will take a break in their current science run on January 16, but will resume observations on March 27th according to current planning https://observing.docs.ligo.org/plan/
Hopefully, the VIRGO detector in Italy will then join the two US LIGO instruments. And hopefully we will then observe, with a much better sky localization from three detectors, the long awaited Binary Neutron Star Merger and the resulting optical kilonova that the entiry community is waiting for. Fingers crossed! - The AAVSO SNEWS campaign is a wonderful opportunity to keep a watchful photometric eye on stars within our own galaxy that have the potential of being the progenitor for the next galactic supernova.
- There are plans to include AGN-related transients like flares etc in the Astro-Colibri alert app, which would allow us to react more promptly to such events.
I'll write in more detail about all these items later, stay tuned.
Cheers
HBE
