SNs: How to report, if there is no chart / no database entry available?

Hello,

we made a photo and a brightness measurement of SN 2021biz in NGC 4227. But when I want to find reference stars or just AUIDs of them around NGC 4227 with VSP, there is nothing. How to proceed? And the SN itself is unknown in the database.

VSX submission

Hello Achim,

The usual procedure is to submit the entry to VSX if you find it is not there.
We do not systematically include supernovae to VSX but we do it after specific requests or if the star is very bright.

The following resources (Manual, FAQ, help page) will be useful if you are not familiar with the VSX submission process:

https://www.aavso.org/vsx/_images/Manual.pdf
https://www.aavso.org/vsx/index.php?view=about.faq
https://www.aavso.org/vsx/index.php?view=about.notice

Supernovae submissions are not difficult. You can usually take the basic information from the TNS (Transient Name Server) page and give that as the reference.

In this case, I have already added the object to VSX so you can now submit data.
See how it looks so you know what information you should provide in case you want to try it the next time you find a supernova not in our database:

SN 2021biz

Best wishes,
Sebastian
