Over on the astronomical spectroscopy forum we have been discussing ways and means of setting up a remote automated observatory using medium/ high resolution slit spectroscopes.

Andrew Smith has fully demonstrated the capabilities of his solution by placing a 5.7 mag star, spectrum B9v C (HIP 104371) onto a 23 micron entrance slit of his LISA spectroscope.
I hope this is a small step for amateurs and a giant leap for the science of spectroscopy.
