Each day as the sun sets an opportunity arises to observe. Many of us look up each night to check in on old, celestial friends- taking measurements of stars as they shine and dim through their life cycles. And in those quiet moments of observation, all of us are unified in our dedication to looking up for both the greater good of scientific curiosity and ultimately, our universe.
As the largest organization of its kind, members of the American Association of Variable Star Observers have forged one of the most comprehensive databases of variable star data in the world. None of this would have been possible without you.
This past year, many of you played a direct role in helping the Hubble Space Telescope target specific stars each month by tracking their light curves and helping NASA scientists know when it was safe to point at various objects. Nightly observations from AAVSO members have been the fulcrum of this multi-agency observation campaign. Together, we are making it possible for this science to happen.
In the coming year, we want to expand our commitment to citizen scientists by providing more educational opportunities, improving our tools for observers, creating more occasions for you to engage with professional astronomers, and growing our dedicated community. Observers and members like you make AAVSO’s work possible, but there is still so much more to discover. As we continue to grow, we need your help.
Your support of the AAVSO will provide opportunities that will influence generations of observers to come. All donations are tax deductible and each dollar positively impacts both our community of observers and the work of astronomers worldwide.
