Special Notice #207: Possible Nova in Scorpius - N Sco 2010 No. 2 [V1311 Sco]

April 26, 2010: Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams CBET 2262 (Daniel W. E. Green, ed.) announces the discovery by Koichi Nishiyama, Kurume, Fukuoka-ken, Japan; and Fujio Kabashima, Miyaki-cho, Saga-ken, Japan, of a possible nova in Scorpius [V1311 Sco] at magnitude 8.6 on two 40-s unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 13.1) taken around April 25.788 UT. They confirmed the new object on unfiltered CCD frames (limiting magnitude 17.3) taken around April 25.796 from which they measured the following precise position:

R.A. = 16:55:13.16, Decl. = -38:03:46.9 (equinox 2000.0)

Nothing was visible on survey frames taken on April 23.786 down to 12.9 and 24.757 down to 13.2, or on a Digitized Sky Survey plate from 1995 June 4 down to red magnitude 18.0.

S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, subsequently forwarded two independent discoveries to the CBAT: Hideo Nishimura, Miyawaki, Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken, Japan, on CCD images from Apr. 25.763 UT at magnitude 8.3 and position end figures 12.96s, 48.1"; and Tadashi Kojima, Tsumagoi, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma-ken, Japan, on CCD images from Apr. 25.738 UT at magnitude 8.8 and position end figures 13.46s, 44.7" +/- 5".

Finder charts for N Sco 2010 No. 2 may be plotted by entering the coordinates above into VSP: http://www.aavso.org/observing/charts/vsp/

Please report observations to the AAVSO International Database as N Sco 2010 No. 2 or VSX J165513.1-380346; N Sco 2010 No. 2 is preferred. Once an AUID is assigned, observations will be uploadable to the AAVSO - if you try and your observations are rejected, it is likely because the AUID has not yet been assigned. You may check the status at VSX.

Good observing!
